Today, almost all new vehicles come with TPMS. It alerts you on the dashboard when a tire loses presión (and, in some cases, also temperature). That helps… but it leaves out many questions that really matter for operations:
- How is the tread depth while the vehicle is on the road?
- How much load does each axle or even each tire (in duals) support?
- How much useful life does it have left?When should it be rotated?
- Is that tire the same one or was it swapped?
- What brand/model/size gives me the best performance for cost per kilometer?
For a personal vehicle, this is already relevant. In a fleet, it’s the day-to-day: inventory and rotations, purchases and budgets, third-party trailers, road calls, and the constant pressure to maintain availability and safety.
What the factory TPMS does (and doesn’t) do
The traditional TPMS alerts the driver when there is low pressure or high temperature. It reduces manual inspections and prevents some blowouts. But—and this is key—no factory TPMS measures tread depth on the road or axle/tire load natively. Nor does it, by itself, create a tire-by-tire history (with brand, model, size, and internal ID) as needed to make cost and maintenance decisions.
Moreover, in the cabin, the alerts compete with other notifications; sometimes they are addressed late or get missed. And without context (tread depth, load, pressure/temperature trends), it’s difficult to prevent instead of only react.
